The Agotime Ziope branch of the National Democratic Party (NDP) has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of registering Togolese nationals in the just-ended limited voters’ registration exercise organized by Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC).
The NDP, whose flagbearer is former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the founder of the NDC, said most of the violence that characterised the registration exercise occurred as a result of the NDC’s quest to register aliens.
A statement issued and signed by the Agotime Ziope constituency chairman of the NDP, I.M. Akumia, stated: “The NDC, as usual, brought people from nearby Togolese villages for more
registration at the Wudesi registration centre.”
“They were seriously challenged by the opposition party agents there. This brought about some serious arguments and confrontations which led to a heavy fight. The NDC agent is alleged to have pulled out a knife and attacked the NPP agent.
“Through their struggle with the knife, they both got wounded severely before the police came to the scene to arrest the situation. The two agents are currently in police custody aiding investigations.”
The statement also accused the District Chief Executive for Agotime Ziope District of holding clandestine meetings with officials of the EC and the NDC to discuss how they could engage in their dubious act without anybody noticing.
“This happened specifically at Amedikpui, Agotime Afegame, and Wudesi registration centers,” the statement emphasised.
“When the other party agents there confronted him, he simply asked if they didn't know that he was the president’s representative in the district and that he had the right to do anything.
“Clearly, this is an absolute abuse of political power,” said the statement.
