We are not babes and the speaker cannot threat us like kids - Muntaka Mubarak

The minority members of Ghana's parliament and opposition party National Democratic Congress says they are going to impeach the Speaker of the parliament the Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye.

The Minority said, the Rt. Hon. Aaron Mike Oquaye is intimidating them and also denying the minorities right to speak in the house.

According to the Honourable Member of Parliament for Sefwi Bodi Constituency Sampson Ahi said the minority in Parliament is in the process to impeach the
Rt. Hon. speaker of parliament. He said many of the parliamentary members dislike his leadership in the house including some of the Majority members of parliament which will give them more than the two-thirds to impeach the speaker.

The Member of Parliament Asawase Kumasi Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak said the Speaker of Parliament is taken the parliamentary rules into his own hands according to him the Speaker deny them to speak in the house, he said how can the Speaker of Parliament deny the minority leader to speak or given him only to ask one question?

Muntaka Mubarak said, "how can the Speaker threat us like babies in the house? He thinks, he is older than us and he can give birth to us but some of our leaders backing us are older than him". "He can not intimidate us, we will make the law works in the house".

"We were in the parliament with him during 1997 and he left but we are still in the house, he should show us a respect not to threaten us like babies.

Majority Response

Speaking to Hello FM in Kumasi, the Majority leader and the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu on reply said the minority in the house that, they don't understand the parliamentary standing orders, he elucidated the standing orders in the house quoted, order 91 and 92 which gives the Speaker write to disallow a member to speak in the house when a member raise objection when the Honourable member is making a submission.

He said anger of the minority are totally weird, because the speaker applies the same rules he applied to the Minority leader to me "I was supposed to talk and I saw my Deputy Majority leader Sarah Adwoa Sarfo wants to make a submission and I allow her and after she finished, the speaker said he will not allow me to talk and I pleaded to him that please I am the Majority and the Minister of the parliamentary Affairs so please Mr. speaker allows me to talk and then he said, "I will allow you to make only one submission because you have given your time to your deputy then I made my submission".

He said, some the majority members complain to me the speaker gives the minority more time to speak on the floor of Parliament than the Majority in the house and it is true. The GITMO issue, the speaker allowed nine of the minority side and six of the majority to speak but still, they were not satisfied. He added.
