Major League Baseball announced Friday that the Mets reliever has received a permanent suspension from the game for failing a third test for illegal performance-enhancing drugs.
Mejia tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic steroid. Never before has a
player exhausted his chances via the game’s drug-testing program.Mejia, 26, hadn’t yet completed serving the sentence for his second infraction, which copped him a 162-game suspension last July 28. His first offense, which drew him an 80-game suspension, occurred last April.“We were deeply disappointed to hear that Jenrry has again violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,” the Mets said in a statement. “We fully support MLB’s policy toward eliminating performance enhancing substances from the sport. As per the Joint Drug Program, we will have no further comment on this suspension.”
The Mets, eyeing the right-hander as a potential midseason reinforcement had signed Mejia to a one-year, $2.47-million contract with the hopes of his arrival in late July. Instead, the Mets will have to look elsewhere for help, and they’ll also get a full refund on their investment.
Mejia is allowed to apply for reinstatement from the lifetime ban in one year, but must miss a minimum of two years.
He had his best season in 2014, when he recorded 28 saves as the team’s closer and struck out 98 batters in 93 2/3 innings.
